Max Headroom was a late 1980's cyberpunk icon, a fictional artificial intelligence who was the subject of a movie and three television shows. Known for his characteristic digital stutter and computer generated look, Max captured the hearts of millions after becoming the de facto "spokesperson" for that perennial favorite: New Coke.
The character of Max was created in 1984 by George Stone, Annabel Jankel, and Rocky Morton. Originally intended to be a an actual computer program, Max was conceived as the world's first "artificial television host. The dramatized version of Max was played by actor Matt Frewer, who had to undergo extensive make-up sessions in order to appear as though he were a digital creation. With Frewer acting in front of a green screen, computerized backgrounds were drawn by hand in post-production to complete the illusion of digitization. The effects were so seamless that Max's creators won a BAFTA award for Graphics, despite the fact that very little of Max was created with a computer.

Max first appeared in the television film Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future. Afterwards, Max followed up his original appearnce with three new shows: The Max Headroom Show, The Original Max Talking Headroom Show, (both talk/ music video shows) and ABC's Max Headroom (a science fiction series based on the original film). Max Headroom in particular was notable in that it predicted many modern sensibilities regarding telvision and corporate control of people's lives through this malleable medium.

While Max Headroom's edginess and willful condemnation of network television provided him with a fresh voice, these same traits led to his downfall. The writers of Max Headroom often delivered scripts at the last minute in an attempt to pass things by the network's sensors. Effectively "biting the hand that fed them" in their satire of news networks, the writers were playing a dangerous game with ABC. While Max's popularity was immense, the show was abruptly relegated to the graveyard slot opposite Miami Vice and Dallas. It was canceled on September 18th, 1987. A sequel movie called Max Headroom for President was planned to be made but it was never put into production. Max still starred in a few New Coke commercials afterwards but his popularity began to wane. Max disappeared. Despite this, Max's influence can be felt strongly in the popular culture of the eighties. Parodies of him have popped up in everything from Sesame Street to Back to the Future II and he laid the groundwork for edgy shows critiquing telvision, such as Black Mirror and Community. Max Headroom lives on.

F-F-Fun F-F-Fact! Max Headroom was the star of his very own Christmas Special: Max Headroom's Giant Christmas Turkey. The special featured the likes of Robin Williams, Michael Caine, David Byrne, and dozens of unenthused children. Several original musical numbers (such as Merry Christmas Santa Claus, You're a Lovely Guy) were performed by Max himself, accompanied by several guest singers. Giant Christmas Turkey was the result of the Max Headroom merchandising arm trying to push into ill-advised areas of commerce.
